My dear lying Friend

 My dear lying friend,

I’ve known you for most of your life, if not all of it.

At first, I didn’t take your lying seriously. Sometimes, especially when we were younger and just playing games, your lies even seemed amusing. But that childish intrigue has long worn off. Over time, I’ve observed a troubling pattern: whenever you’re cornered or given the chance to come clean, you often choose instead to lie, and then stack one lie upon another.

From where I stand, this is not only demeaning—it’s disgusting.

It’s demeaning because I’ve walked with you through many seasons of life. I expected, at the very least, some level of honesty. Why lie to my face when the truth is plain for both of us to see? Do you think I can’t discern what’s black and white? Or worse—do you believe I’m too blind or slow to notice? If anything, I should begin to question your own grip on reality for assuming I won’t see the deceit.

But beyond personal offense, your lying is spiritually revolting. It’s not merely a betrayal of friendship—it’s a sin against our holy God, who detests falsehood. As I grow in reverence for His holiness, I understand more deeply why Proverbs 6:16–19 places lying alongside things God hates most: proud eyes, murderous hands, scheming hearts, and those who stir up division. Lying isn’t a “small” sin—it’s the seedbed of many others:

• People commit adultery by lying about their status.

• Murders often happen to cover up truth.

• Theft thrives through deception.

• National and corporate corruption is sustained by falsified paperwork and deceitful practices.

• People trapped in debt often lie—about how they got there, when they’ll repay, or to maintain a false image, often driven by pride and greed.

Even rebellion against God’s created order such as rejecting one’s biological sex or justifying same-sex desires—often begins with lies: lies about identity, about truth, and ultimately about God Himself. People install and worship their own idols and false teachers because they have abandoned God’s truth. They even defend and follow them to the grave—because they are liars. They crave leaders who speak what their itching ears want to hear, not what God commands. But in doing so, they seal their deception and destruction.

By now, I’ve come to a painful but necessary conclusion: those who love lies, are unapologetic in sin, and remain consistently dishonest simply cannot be fully trusted. The world is upside down because of sin—and sin began with a lie. It continues today through the same deception, across every threshold of society. A person who is comfortable lying will just as easily commit other sins—without remorse.

Our God is holy. He hates sin—and He most certainly hates lying and all it produces. So how much more should we, who claim to follow Christ, hate what He hates? How can we continue to tolerate what He clearly detests?

That is why, to be honest, I’ve grown increasingly cold toward your dishonesty. And it’s why I continue to pray—not out of bitterness, but out of hope—that you will come to fear the Lord and stop lying. Not just to me—but to all His creation.
